Wednesday, 15th September Local History Group meeting at All Saints Church, Foley Road East from 7.00pm - 9.00pm. Laurie Hornsby will be remembering the Birmingham of the 60s. Laurie is a Birmingham born musician, author and playwright. He played with the Raymond Froggatt Band and supported Carl Wayne and the Move. He co-wrote 'Wallop Mrs. Cox', a musical about a family of Bull Ring market traders, and 'Ridin' the Number 8' - a look at the old inner circle bus route. His first book 'Birmingham Rocked' recorded the heyday of rock and roll in Birmingham from the mid 50s to 1963. His follow-up book 'Brum Rocked On' revisits the haunts and venues that played host to the 1960s music revolution and looks at the characters and musicians of that time. Admission £2.00. 17th September, Walsall Hospice annual Starlight Walk in Walsall Arboretum. The magical evening will start at 7pm, when participants will complete 5 circuits of the Arboretum, approx. 5.5 miles. The walk is suitable for people of all fitness levels, and the pathway is suitable for wheelchairs and prams. Dogs on leads are welcome too. To register for the walk please go to our Online Registrations available at their website, see below, before the 10th September. Registration will cost £10 per family (Up to 2 adults and 2 children,) £5 per adult and £2.50 for extra children. You will then receive your information and sponsorship pack so that you can start getting sponsorship for the walk. All money you raise will go to help run the new Walsall hospice when it opens in February 2011. Saturday, September 18th launch of Walsall Dance Festival in Gallery Square in front of the New Art Gallery, Wolverhampton Street, Walsall. Saturday, 25th September, 'Health for the Family' event to be held at the Streetly Community Centre, Foley Road East, from 10.00am - 4.00pm. There will be two talks during the morning - the first at 11.00am on Alzheimers and Dementia followed at 12 noon by a talk about caring for those suffering from these conditions, and what help can be given to the carers themselves. At 2.00pm, the first of the afternoon talks will be on general family health followed at 3.00pm by a talk on how lifestyle can affect your health. The afternoon will end with a question and answer session on family health hosted by Dr. Andrew Thornett from Blackwood Health Centre. During the day, professionals from Walsall Primary Care Trust will be available to give on the spot advice on health issues. There will also be stalls providing a variety of health information, including a healthy eating stall where visitors will be encouraged to sample different types of fruit. There will be a free prize draw which will be drawn at the end of the day. The event will be officially opened by Gary Clarke and his wife, the Mayor and Mayoress of Walsall. All residents, regardless of which GP surgery they attend, are invited to any or all of the talks, or to just call in and have a look around.
